The serverless hype (Lambda, Cloud Functions, edge computing) often hides the real challenges of enterprise-level implementation. Promises of near-zero cost and infinite scalability are real, but they demand a meticulous architecture.

Cold Starts: The Silent Villain

When a serverless function goes untriggered for a while, the cloud provider shuts down the underlying container. The next request suffers the dreaded cold start (latency delay). In languages such as Java or C#, that delay can be fatal to the user experience. How do you mitigate it?

  • Using provisioned concurrency (keeping instances warm).
  • Adopting nimbler runtimes such as Node.js or Go.
  • Edge computing (Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge) running distributed code close to the end user.

Vendor Lock-in: Myth or Risk?

Coupling your infrastructure deeply to AWS or GCP can make leaving expensive. However, the cost of abstracting your architecture to be multi-cloud (using Kubernetes for everything, say) often exceeds the cost of accepting the lock-in. Bytnex is pragmatic: we solve real business problems first.

When NOT to Use Serverless

Applications with continuous high volume (streaming, heavy websockets) run more efficiently on dedicated servers. Our architectural consulting calculates total cost of ownership (TCO) before deciding on the ideal stack.
